History

  • Formerly known as:

    • Decca Records (1934-1971)

    • MCA Records (1971-1989)

    • MCA Music Entertainment Group (1989-1996)

    • Universal Music Group (1996-Present)

  • Founded in September 1934

  • May 2004- UMG was cast under separate management from Universal Studios

  • June 2007- UMG acquire Sanctuary  which becomes UMG's entertainment merchandising and brand management division, Bravado

  • 2008- UMG agree to make its catalogue available on Spotify

  • January 1, 2011- Doug Morris steps down as CEO and Lucian Grainge takes his place

  • 2011- EMI agree to sell its recored music operations to Universal Music Group for £1.2 billion

  • September 21, 2012- The sale of EMI to UMG is approved however the European Commission approved under the one condition that the merged company divest one third of its total operation to other companies with a proven track record in the music industry

  • March 20, 2011- UMG announce their worldwide extension of their exclusive distribution deal with the Disney Music Group, excluding Japan

  • August 2013- UMG becomes the first company in the US to have nine of the Top 10 songs on the digital charts and then a few weeks later becomes the first to hold all ten of the Top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart

  • 2014- UMG announce the disbandment  of Island Def Jam Music (one of the four operational umbrella groups within UMG), UMG purchases Eagle Rock Entertainment and produce their first movie the next year
