18. Final Statement of Intent

The intended concept of this music video is a man and woman are both really in love with each other but the woman doesn't feel as if the man truly lover her back as he is unsure of how to convey his real feelings for her. They begin to move apart despite both loving each other until it is too late. This fits into the genre of love song as it is about a deep love between two people but one of them, the woman, becomes distant and mores away due to misunderstanding the mans love for her.The target audience of this song is alternative. Specifically the alternative people who like rock/gothic rock. The band have a borderline gothic style which helps the alternative audience relate more to the band and make the music and aesthetic more appealing to them. This video fits into the core values of Universal Music Group as the band is a significant musical development in the gothic rock and alternative spectrum and UMG aim to be in the vanguard of such things. They also aim to cover music across all genres and having music such as this helps broaden their spectrum.

For performers I will use a man or masculine person and a woman. The masculine or male performer will be dressed in black and white gothic-esque clothes, have dark hair and possibly simple dark/black makeup. This will visually appeal to the alternative audience and fit the voice used to sing this song. He will appear in most scenes as he will lip-sync on a beach or a cliff and be in most scenes with the woman. The lady will wear a white a flowy dress that is an undetermined length at the moment as it will depend on who plays the woman. For the mise-en-scene the location for the video will be a beach, preferably with cliffs, and it will be filmed during sunset or an overcast day. This is not only to add mood to the video but to also provide better lighting for the filming of the video. Filming during sunset provides dramatic lighting and when there is overcast there is also a lower chance of overexposure which could ruin footage and make it unseeable or uneditable. This is also similar to most of The Cure's other videos as it will also be a very moody and gothic/alternative themed muse-en-scene. The mise-en-scene of the video will help represent the hardships and pain the man and woman are going through and it also links to the lyrics about the stormy and rains sea. This representation will help attract my target audience because it will fit the aesthetic of the band and the music which will help keep their attention on the video while watching it and it will help catch their attention before they even watch it. I will use editing for my transitions in the video between scenes. I may also use it to add filters to the video to make it fit the aesthetic and mood I am aiming for. So I will edit things such as saturation and exposure and I may even add a filter depending on the final results of filming. These combinations will help convey the love, pain and longing of both character in the video and also fulfil the alternative and gothic aesthetic for the alternative audience to relate to.

I am going to use performance and narrative in this video to help convey the longing and pain both the man and woman experience and feel. The active won't be too under dramatic but it also won't be over the top. The most acting will come from the man as the song is from his point of view and he will be in the video the most. Other aspects I intend to use in this video is drone footage. For the introduction I want to have a drone shot from over the sea that moves in on the couple of the singer by himself. I also want to film footage of the woman in the sea in her white dress first in water up to her knees at the deepest and relatively close to shore and then as the music video moves on she will get further away and deeper.

The intended message of the the video is you no matter how much you love someone they can leave even when you both reciprocate feelings. It can help bring the importance of communication in a relationship to light as well for the viewers. This is appropriate for the genre of love as it is about a misunderstood love between a couple who both love each other so much but can't understand it. It is also appropriate for the Universal Music Group as the band is very commercially successful in and out of the UK. It also provides a variety in UMG's genres as it is love and alternative/gothic rock. These aspects and ideas are also suitable for the alternative audience as the song itself is an alternative song about love and the aimed aesthetic of the video is alternative/gothic.
